About Tour Package

The Bale Mountains hold a piece of Ethiopia you won't find anywhere else on this continent — an Afro-alpine highland where the wildlife is as rare as the scenery is dramatic. I built this four-day trek for travelers who want to get out of the vehicle and onto the trail, walking through Mountain Nyala grazing grounds, across the wide-open Sanetti Plateau, and into the Harenna forest edge where the Ethiopian wolf still roams free.

We begin at Dinsho, the park's headquarters, with an easy afternoon hike to settle in and spot our first wildlife. From there, the real trekking begins — two long days covering roughly six to seven hours each, first to Soddota by way of Habera Waterfall, then on to Adelye Woodland, with the Bale highlands unfolding around us the entire way.

This is not a rushed checklist of sights. It's a slow, deliberate walk through one of the richest pockets of endemic wildlife in Africa — the Ethiopian wolf, Mountain Nyala, Menelik's Bushbuck, and birds found nowhere else on earth, like the Blue-winged Goose and Wattled Ibis. Every night we camp under the stars, with a cook and park scouts handling the details so you can focus on the trail.

On the final morning, a shorter two-to-three-hour walk brings us back through the Gaessy grasslands to Dinsho, where we'll say goodbye to the mountains before transferring back to Goba or Addis Ababa. If you've been looking for an Ethiopia itinerary built around wildlife and walking rather than churches and cities, this is the trip I'd point you toward.
