Nigisti doesn't send anyone into the Danakil Depression lightly — it's one of the most extreme landscapes on the planet, and also one of the most extraordinary. This is her 3-day route into the heart of it: Erta Ale's glowing lava lake, the mineral-painted terraces of Dallol, and the salt flats of Lake Asale, 136 meters below sea level.

You'll fly early from Addis Ababa to Semera, then drive by 4x4 across asphalt and rough track toward Erta Ale, one of the world's few volcanoes with a permanent lava lake. You'll stand at the crater rim at sunset and again at sunrise, when the glowing basalt is at its most dramatic, and sleep on a simple mattress under the stars near the lava fields below.

From there the route runs to Hamedela and Dallol, where sulfur springs have painted the ground in shades of teal, yellow, and rust, and on to Lake Asale's salt pans, where you can float in a desert salt pond before the drive to Mekelle and your evening flight home.

Nigisti is honest about what this trip asks of you: the heat is real, the roads are rough, and you'll be sleeping outdoors on mattresses and open-air beds for two nights running, with a cook and full camping equipment along to look after you. In exchange, you get to stand somewhere very few people on earth ever will.

  • Danakil Depression, Ethiopia ( Departure: 6:45 am )
    Take an early morning flight to Semera at 6:45 AM, followed by a 340 km journey on an asphalt road and an additional 4 km on a rough road (6 hours' drive) to reach Erta Ale, one of the world's most renowned active volcanoes. Even if the volcano is not currently displaying its peak level of activity due to a major eruption that occurred a few months ago, it remains an impressive site, especially at sunset and sunrise, when the glowing lava fields create a striking view. You will spend approximately 2–3 hours in the late afternoon observing the visible lava and occasional edge collapses. A further 2-hour visit in the morning provides an opportunity to experience the crater in daylight before returning to the base camp. You will have a picnic lunch in Afdera and some time to swim at Lake Afdera.

    In the morning at 6:00 AM, you will have time to see the sunrise over the lava for a few hours. Then, you will be back at your campsite for breakfast and drive to Hamedela for about 100 km on half good and half bad rough roads (about 3 hours). Upon arrival in Hamedela, you will have a coffee break before your visit to Dallol and Lake Asale, situated 136 meters below sea level, the second-lowest point in Africa after Lake Assal in Djibouti. You will drive 20 km to see the sunset at the salt ground and to swim in the desert salt pond. Then, you will drive back to your campsite at Hamedela.

    In the morning at 6:00 AM, you will have time to see the sunrise at the Salt Lake and drive to Dallol to see the colorful minerals bubbling over the ground for a few hours. Then, you will be back at your campsite for coffee, as you will have your breakfast at the Salt Lake with the view, and drive 200 km on an asphalt road (3 hours) to Mekelle. You will have a picnic lunch in Abala before your departure to Addis Ababa in the evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

By a short domestic flight, roughly an hour, which is included in your package. The overland route between the two cities takes two or more days on mountain roads, so flying is how nearly every traveler makes this journey.
While the Ark itself is heavily guarded by a single monk and cannot be seen directly, you will visit the sacred precinct of the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion where it resides, feeling the deep spiritual atmosphere that surrounds it.
Manageable for most travelers. Lalibela involves walking on uneven rock surfaces, some steps, and narrow trenches between churches; Axum is mostly flat walking across the stelae field and church grounds.
